DIPLOMA IN COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY

Overview

Rationale

Kenya is undergoing a number of socio-political transformations. These are posing a challenge to people’s life-skills. The programme focuses on Applied Psychological strategies to enhance outcomes for clients struggling with a wide range of challenges which may vary from intra-personal to inter-personal issues and systemic problems. A wide variety of theoretical models are taught with an emphasis on eclectic approaches offering integrative themes including neurobiological understanding relevant to psychology. The approaches to problem that this program is aiming at inculcating in the learners are in line with aims of the Kenya’s Vision 2030 and Global goals for Sustainable development.

 

Philosophy

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. The goals of psychology are to describe, explain, control and predict behaviour. The program is offering both foundation and applied areas of psychology to appropriate educate and train the students for practice.  In a world full of diverse challenges, psychological knowledge and skills will helps clients who are facing diverse challenges not to give up in life but to face and solve the problem.

 

Objectives

The broad objective of this programme is to produce counselors with professional skills in counseling psychology.  By the end of the course, the graduates should be able to:

Identify and solve different types of psycho-social problems at a basic level.

Undertake basic research relevant to their profession.

Step 2: Registration and creation of User Account - To register, you need an email address and phone number that will be validated during registration. Every applicant must create their own personal user account.

Step 3: Profile Management - Key-in your personal details and upload scanned copies of academic certificates and a passport size photograph. Only when your profile is complete can you apply for the programme you wish to undertake.

Step 4: Programme Selection - Select and apply for the course you are interested in. You will be issued with a REFERENCE NUMBER and directed to pay the prescribed application fee through the following Available Payment options:

  1. Credit/Debit Card
  2. M-Pesa Pay Bill
  3. Direct Cash Deposit at any Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) branch

Upon payment, you will receive a confirmation of the payment on the email address and phone number registered in step 2.

Step 5: Application Tracking - Track the status of your application online through the system.  Alerts will be sent to your registered email address and phone number.

Mode of Delivery

The programme shall adopt blended learning through the use of face-to-face and online modes. The face-to-face learning will take place within the classroom setting at the Main Campus. Currently, learning is through online delivery. The online classes are conducted over video conferencing platforms such as Mtihani, Zoom and Google Meet, among others

 

 

COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION

  The Program comprises 8 core courses and 4 electives.

    1. The students should take 10 taught courses, a practicum, and a research
      1. project.
    2. A candidate shall remain registered in the programme for up to 3 Semesters.
    3. Semester 1 constitutes the theoretical foundation of the program.
    4. Semesters 2 and 3 form the professional component of the programme and
      1. have 4 course units each.       
    5. In each of the semesters, candidates shall be required to take a
      1. minimum of two course units and a maximum of four course units.
    6. Each course unit shall have 45 contact hours and shall be covered within a
      1. semester.
    7. The practicum shall take at least 45 attachment hours or one month, in an
      1. organization approved by the Department of Psychology, and is equivalent
      2. to one course unit.
    8. A candidate shall embark on the Research Project after successful

The University of Nairobi, Faculty of Arts regulations shall apply.

To be admitted for the Diploma in Counselling Psychology, a candidate should have any of the following minimum qualifications:      

 

  1. KCSE mean grade C
  2. KCSE mean grade C- or equivalent plus a Certificate.
  3. An O’ Level with a minimum Division III or equivalent.
  4. A’ Level qualification with a minimum of two subsidiary passes or equivalent.
